The Congregation of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Eldoret are dynamic and religious women who have dedicated their lives to filling the gaps of the needs of the needy in the communities. The Congregation was founded in 1962 by the Late Rt. Rev. Bishop Joseph Brendan Houlihan the then
bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Eldoret.
Currently the congregation has a total of one hundred and thirty eight (138) professed members. One hundred
and nine (109) of the Sisters are with perpetual vows while twenty nine are with temporary vows. There are
six novices, three-second years plus three in canonical year. They have twenty six (26) postulants and thirty
three (33) Residential Aspirants.
Their charism is to participate in the Redeeming Mission of Jesus Christ. Their vision is to be a congregation
that strives to be an exemplary and dynamic women who are religious and live a consecrated life inspired by
the Gospel values .Their mission is to witness the Redeeming Mission of Jesus Christ through their service to
God and God’s people. They have programs on Early Childhood Development from 0-5 years. The
Congregation is also involved in running various pre-schools and clinics, health centers, dispensaries and
hospitals that target expectant mothers and infants apart from other health issues.
The congregation also provides other services in the eleven Dioceses in Kenya. Most of the communities they
serve are situated in arid and semi-arid areas that experience frequent internal and external conflicts. Majority
of the people they serve are infected or affected by HIV/AIDS. Most of the children have challenges in
education especially the girl child who are married of early in their primary schools. They are also involved in
various ministries such as education, health, pastoral and social ministry to name a few.
